When you plan a new security system, one of the first decisions is whether to go with analog HD cameras recorded on a DVR, or IP cameras recorded on an NVR. Both work well, but they suit different needs and budgets.
How they work
- Analog HD (DVR) systems send video over coaxial cable to a digital video recorder, which converts it into digital footage.
- IP (NVR) systems send digital video over a network cable. Each camera is a small computer that processes images itself.
Quick comparison
| Feature | Analog HD CCTV | IP Camera System |
|---|---|---|
| Image quality | Up to 5MP / 8MP | 2MP to 8MP and above |
| Cabling | Coaxial + separate power | Single network cable with PoE |
| Smart features | Basic motion detection | Person and vehicle detection, line crossing |
| Expansion | Limited by DVR channels | Flexible, works over the network |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Moderate |
When analog makes sense
Analog systems are a good fit for small homes and shops with a limited budget, or when you are upgrading an existing system and want to reuse the coaxial cables already in the walls.
When to choose IP
IP cameras are the better choice when you need:
- Clearer footage to identify faces or number plates
- Smart alerts that ignore trees, shadows and animals
- Cameras spread across a large building or multiple floors
- A system you can easily expand later
For most new offices, factories and larger homes, we recommend IP cameras with a PoE NVR. The installation is cleaner and the system grows with you.
