Weak Wi-Fi is one of the most common complaints we hear from offices. Video calls freeze, files upload slowly and some rooms barely get a signal. The good news: most problems can be fixed without buying the most expensive router.
1. Replace one router with multiple access points
A single router in a corner cannot cover a whole floor through concrete walls. Ceiling-mounted access points spread across the office give strong, even coverage and let devices roam smoothly.
2. Use cables wherever you can
Desktops, printers, CCTV recorders and IP phones should be connected by Cat6 cable. Every wired device frees up wireless capacity for laptops and phones.
3. Place access points in open, central spots
Avoid hiding access points inside cabinets or behind metal racks. Mount them high and central to the area they serve.
4. Choose the right channels
Neighbouring networks cause interference. Use the 5 GHz band for speed and let a controller pick the least crowded channels automatically.
5. Separate guest and staff networks
A guest Wi-Fi network keeps visitors off your business network and protects your data. You can also limit guest speed so staff always get priority.
6. Organise your network rack
Messy, unlabelled cables make troubleshooting slow. A tidy rack with a patch panel and labelled ports saves hours when something goes wrong.
7. Get a professional Wi-Fi survey
A site survey measures real signal strength across your office and shows exactly where access points should go.
Most “slow internet” problems are actually local network problems. Fix the network first before paying for a bigger internet package.
