Many people only discover their CCTV system has stopped recording when they need footage after an incident. A few minutes of regular maintenance prevents that. Use this checklist every month, and book a professional service at least once or twice a year.
Monthly checks you can do yourself
- Check every camera view on your monitor or mobile app. Make sure none are blank, blurry or pointing in the wrong direction.
- Play back recordings from a few days ago to confirm the recorder is saving footage.
- Check the date and time on the recorder. Incorrect time makes footage hard to use as evidence.
- Test remote viewing on your phone, especially after changing your internet router or password.
Every three months
- Gently clean camera lenses and domes to remove dust, spider webs and water marks.
- Look for loose connectors, damaged cables and signs of moisture in outdoor junction boxes.
- Make sure trees, signboards or new construction are not blocking camera views.
Every six to twelve months
- Check hard disk health in the recorder settings. Disks wear out and should be replaced every few years.
- Update recorder and camera firmware for security fixes.
- Test your UPS or power backup so cameras keep recording during load-shedding.
- Review user accounts and change default passwords.
Warning signs: cameras that restart on their own, missing recording hours, or “HDD error” messages mean it is time for a service visit.
